Vice President Imaging
Dr. Finlan has over 30 years experience in optics and laser engineering. At Clear Align, Mike is the program manager for the development of a proprietary, high-power, pulsed, fiber-optic laser designed for implementation in laser rangefinding, ladar imaging, robotics, and altimetry applications. He develops new system designs for imaging applications that include wide-angle, infrared, and polarization-dependent missions. He fills the lead role on all Government opportunities and has been instrumental in establishing Clear Align’s first medical sensing program.
Dr. Finlan was Business Development Manager at Special Optics, Inc., a Senior Laser Engineer at GE, and a cofounder and Director of the Photonics Division of LSA, Inc., where he was Program Manager on 24 SBIR contracts. At Special Optics, Mike led the company into its first SBIR contracts, one of which resulted in the development of the world’s largest refractive zoom lens for use in missile tracking at distances up to 100 km. At Lucent, Mike was a project leader in product development of high-power fiber-optic lasers that used pump powers as high as 35 W and produced about 20 W at 1100 nm. As co-founder and Director of Photonics at LSA, he was responsible for the development and application of innovative optical technologies with emphasis on optical remote sensing, optical beam steering, liquid-crystal devices, free-space laser communications, laser radar, binary optics, optical phased arrays, wavefront characterization, and miniature optical design. Mike was the Technical Director of Communications Engineering for the SDI/BMD Systems Engineering & Integration Program for GE and the Principal Investigator and Program Manager on the Phase Sensing & Control subcontract on the Air Force Phillips Lab PILOT External Cavity Program. Mike established and directed the Diode Array Technology laboratory at GE Astro Space, where he led projects in binary optics, optical phase sensing, optical phased arrays, holography, liquid crystals, laser communications, and high-power lasers. At SAIC, Mike designed, built, and tested Nd:glass slab lasers as an on-site consultant at the Army Night Vision & Electro-Optics Laboratory at Ft. Belvoir, VA.
Mike earned a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics from The Johns Hopkins University, an M. S. in Optics from the University of Rochester, and a B.S. in Chemistry from Clarkson University. He has authored or co-authored over 40 papers and is a member of the Optical Society of America and SPIE.
